Travels through Spain![]() |
El Escorial is a landmark should be on the “must see” list. The town itself, San Lorenzo de el Escorial is quant and unassuming. It is located in the foothills northwest of Madrid. The palace of Felipe II is the main attraction. The palace houses some of the best artwork in Spain. The frescos on much of the interior walls are stunning. The tour de force is the Royal Pantheon, which is the mausoleum for the monarchs and their families of Spain. (with exception of Fernando and Isabel who’s mausoleum is in Granada). Get there early because once the tour buses come, it gets very crowded. Also, get an audio tour guide. Those are always worth the money. |
| Women rule! In the coastal waters of Galicia, which is a region in northern Spain, the women of the area do the majority of the shellfish harvesting. These women are called Marisquadoras. They are gaining power in the male dominated fishing industry because of their contributions and hard work for the industry. Galicia specializes in mussels, scallops, clams, octopus, tuna and much more. To get a sampling of these fish and seafood products, go to http://www.comidaespana.com/seafood-products.html. |
Old world hospitality! At every restaurant or bar in Spain, as you sit down at your table, the wait staff always sets out a little appetizer without even ordering it. Olives or nuts are a common beginning tapa or pincho. Most restaurants and bars have elaborate tapa menus. Tapas are a fun and inexpensive way to expand your dining experience. Spain is also very proud of their service in restaurants. It is not unusual to have a few wait staff for your table. They are very professional and very well trained. |
